Who’d have thought reading a book on Neurochemicals could be so interesting and easy to read. If you’re curious about how your brain treats the chemicals that make you happy, then this book is a must read. Loretta Graziano’s Habits of a Happy Brain shows you how to make use of Serotonin, Dopamine, Oxytocin and Endorphin levels to make you a happier person.
Loretta Graziano says that within 45 days you can re-train your brain to trigger the chemicals which make you happy. Sounds too good to be true, right? Wrong. The book explains how each neurochemical influences your behaviour and how, by doing daily exercises to re-programme your brain, you can change these influences. An entertaining read and a thoroughly useful book.
Serotonin is actually incredibly simple. Neurons communicate by specialized areas of their cells called synapses where they are very close together. The first nerve cell dumps neurotransmitters into the space between, and the second nerve cell on the other side has receptors which recognize the transmitter and respond accordingly. This creates serotonin. When serotonin levels are low, we’re more depressed, and when they’re high, we’re happier.
